Persecution and Tragedy
Despite his wartime contributions, Turing was prosecuted in 1952 under British laws criminalizing homosexuality, then sentenced to chemical castration as an alternative to imprisonment. He died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning, ruled a suicide, though some historians have since questioned the circumstances.
Posthumous Recognition
Turing received a formal royal pardon from Queen Elizabeth II in 2013, and subsequent legislation known as the "Turing Law" posthumously pardoned other men convicted under similar historical laws. He is now widely celebrated as a founding figure of computer science and artificial intelligence.
