A design for a fully mechanical computer, conceived in the 1830s, was never actually built during its inventor's lifetime — and wasn't proven workable until a working model was finally constructed more than a century later.

The Difference Engine

Babbage first designed the Difference Engine, a mechanical calculator intended to automate the production of accurate mathematical tables, addressing the significant problem of human calculation errors that plagued printed tables of the era.

Funding and Engineering Challenges

Despite receiving significant government funding, the Difference Engine was never fully completed during Babbage's lifetime, hampered by the immense precision engineering challenges of manufacturing thousands of interlocking mechanical parts with the technology available at the time.

A More Ambitious Vision

Babbage later conceived of the far more ambitious Analytical Engine, which incorporated concepts foundational to modern computing, including a dedicated processing unit, memory storage, and the ability to be programmed using punched cards.

A Collaboration with Lovelace

Babbage's collaboration with mathematician Ada Lovelace proved historically significant, as her detailed notes on the Analytical Engine included what is now recognized as the first algorithm designed to be processed by a machine.

Vindicated by History

Although the Analytical Engine was never built during Babbage's lifetime, his designs are now recognized as remarkably prescient precursors to modern computer architecture, and a working Difference Engine was finally constructed from his original plans in the 1990s, proving his designs would have functioned as intended.
