Born into a fractured tribal world with no natural claim to power, the boy once known as Temujin would go on to unite rival clans into the force behind history's largest contiguous land empire.

From Temujin to Universal Ruler

Born Temujin around 1162 into a fractured tribal society on the Mongolian steppe, he endured a difficult childhood after his father's death left his family impoverished and vulnerable. Through a combination of military skill, strategic alliances, and a reputation for rewarding loyalty regardless of tribal origin, he gradually united the rival Mongol and Turkic tribes.

Becoming Genghis Khan

In 1206, Temujin was proclaimed Genghis Khan, meaning roughly "universal ruler," by an assembly of Mongol chieftains, marking the formal founding of the Mongol Empire and the beginning of his campaigns of conquest.

Building the Largest Empire in History

Genghis Khan's armies conquered vast territories across China, Central Asia, and into Eastern Europe, using highly disciplined cavalry tactics, sophisticated logistics, and psychological warfare to defeat larger but less mobile and coordinated opposing forces.

Beyond Brutal Conquest

Although often remembered primarily for the brutality of his military campaigns, Genghis Khan also established a unified code of law known as the Yassa, promoted religious tolerance across his empire, and revitalized long-distance trade along the Silk Road by ensuring safer passage for merchants.

An Enduring Empire

Genghis Khan died in 1227, but his empire continued expanding under his sons and grandsons, eventually stretching from Korea to Eastern Europe and becoming, at its height, the largest contiguous land empire the world has ever seen.
