Grace Hopper
Grace Hopper was an American computer scientist and U.S. Navy rear admiral whose pioneering work on programming languages, including developing the first compiler, helped shape the foundations of modern computer science.
Frustrated that programming required speaking machine code directly, Hopper built the first tool that let people write instructions in something closer to plain English instead.
From the Navy to the Mark I
Hopper joined the U.S. Navy Reserve during World War II and was subsequently assigned to work on the Harvard Mark I computer, one of the earliest large-scale automatic calculating machines, marking the beginning of her long and influential career in computing.
