Built directly on the ashes of a failed predecessor that couldn't stop a second world war, this organization was designed from the start to succeed where the League of Nations had not.

Learning from Failure

The UN was established explicitly to succeed where the earlier League of Nations had failed — that organization, founded after World War I, had proven powerless to prevent the outbreak of an even more devastating global conflict just two decades later.

Founding in San Francisco

Representatives of 51 founding member states gathered in San Francisco in 1945 to draft and sign the UN Charter, formally establishing the organization on October 24, 1945, a date still celebrated annually as United Nations Day.

Structure of Power

The UN is organized around several key bodies, most notably the General Assembly, where all member states have an equal voice, and the more powerful Security Council, which holds primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and includes five permanent members — the US, UK, France, Russia, and China — each holding veto power over major resolutions.

A Broad Global Mandate

Beyond peacekeeping, the UN oversees a vast range of global initiatives through specialized agencies addressing public health, education, refugee protection, and human rights, including organizations like the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

Nearly Universal Membership

Today, the UN has 193 member states, representing nearly every recognized country in the world, and continues to serve as the primary global forum for international diplomacy, conflict resolution, and coordinated responses to global crises.
