Hollywood's Studio Consolidation Accelerates as Streaming Giants Reshape the Industry

Major media mergers and a sprawling bidding battle for Warner Bros. are redefining how movies and TV are made, financed, and distributed.

The entertainment industry's long-running consolidation push moved into a new phase in late 2025, as mergers, acquisition bids, and corporate restructuring reshaped the major studios and streaming platforms that dominate how audiences watch movies and television.

Paramount Skydance Completes Merger

Paramount Global closed its merger with Skydance Media in August 2025, creating Paramount Skydance under the leadership of David Ellison. The deal followed months of regulatory review, with approval from the Federal Communications Commission a key step, since Paramount holds broadcast licenses through CBS. The combined company brings together the CBS network, the Paramount film studio, and the Paramount+ streaming service, with management promising a stronger focus on streaming profitability and cost discipline.

The Warner Bros. Discovery Sale Process

Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns the Warner Bros. film and television studios, HBO, HBO Max, and cable networks such as CNN and TNT, announced in mid-2025 that it would explore a separation of its streaming and studio assets from its traditional cable networks. That move set off a competitive process in which several companies expressed interest in acquiring all or part of the business.

In December 2025, Netflix announced an agreement to acquire Warner Bros.' studios and streaming operations, a deal that would bring the HBO library and the DC Studios film franchises under the Netflix umbrella. Paramount Skydance responded by pursuing its own bid for the company as a whole. The contest, which involves regulatory scrutiny and shareholder considerations, remains a major story across the industry as of this writing, and its outcome could alter competitive dynamics among streaming services for years.

Why the Consolidation Matters

The drive toward scale reflects economic pressures that have built since the streaming boom of the late 2010s. Cable television revenue continues to decline as subscribers cut the cord, while streaming services have struggled to reach consistent profitability. Many companies have responded by raising subscription prices, bundling services together, introducing advertising-supported tiers, and cutting costs through layoffs and the consolidation of overlapping departments.

For creative workers, these shifts carry real consequences. Mergers often lead to reduced production budgets, fewer original series commissioned, and the shelving of completed projects for tax or portfolio reasons. Labor organizations have pressed for protections around residuals, staffing, and the use of artificial intelligence, issues that were central to the 2023 Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Labor Context

The industry's labor landscape also remains in flux. The SAG-AFTRA video game strike, which began in July 2024, ended in mid-2025 after performers ratified a new contract with provisions addressing AI consent and compensation. That agreement is widely viewed as a template for how performers may negotiate protections as generative AI tools become more common in production.

What Comes Next

Industry observers expect further deal activity, regulatory reviews, and strategic realignments in 2026. Audiences may see fewer standalone streaming platforms over time, with more content concentrated in a smaller number of large libraries. Whether that consolidation leads to better value for viewers or simply higher prices and fewer choices will be a central question as the year unfolds.
