The Louvre Heist: How Thieves Stole the French Crown Jewels in Broad Daylight

On the morning of October 19, 2025, four thieves pulled off one of the most brazen museum robberies in modern history, stealing eight pieces of the French Crown Jewels from the Louvre in Paris in broad daylight. The heist, which took less than eight minutes from start to finish, stunned the art world, embarrassed French authorities, and captivated a global audience with its audacity.

A Sunday Morning Raid

The robbery took place at approximately 9:30 a.m., just 30 minutes after the museum opened its doors to visitors. The thieves used a truck-mounted mechanical lift — a cherry picker stolen nine days earlier — to reach the second floor of the Louvre's facade. They cut through an upstairs window using industrial disc cutters, entered the Galerie d'Apollon, and smashed two high-security display cases containing some of France's most historically significant royal jewelry.

The entire operation inside the museum lasted roughly four minutes. The thieves grabbed eight pieces and fled back through the window, escaping while visitors and staff were still coming to terms with what had happened. The heist unfolded just 250 meters from the Mona Lisa.

What Was Stolen

The stolen pieces belonged to two French empresses. From the collection of Empress Marie-Louise, the second wife of Napoleon I, the thieves took an emerald and diamond necklace and matching earrings — pieces Napoleon had gifted her upon their marriage in 1810. From the collection of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, they took a sapphire and diamond tiara containing 1,083 diamonds and 24 sapphires, along with additional brooches and jewelry. The stolen items were collectively valued at approximately 88 million euros.

A Crown Dropped on the Sidewalk

In a remarkable detail, the thieves dropped Empress Eugenie's gold, diamond, and emerald crown during their escape. They had apparently crushed it while trying to extract it through a hole in the display case that was too small. The crown, containing 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, was recovered from the sidewalk — damaged but salvageable. Museum officials later confirmed that restoration would be possible.

The Investigation

Within a week, French police arrested two men in their 30s from the Seine-Saint-Denis area north of Paris. Nine additional suspects were subsequently detained during the investigation, with five ultimately charged. However, the stolen jewels have not been recovered. Prosecutors warned that the gold could be melted down and the precious stones re-cut to erase their provenance, making recovery increasingly unlikely with each passing day.

Security Under Scrutiny

The Louvre — the world's most visited museum, with 8.7 million visitors in 2024 — faced intense scrutiny over how such a robbery could occur during regular opening hours. Staff unions had raised concerns about understaffing and security shortfalls for months. The Apollo Gallery was sealed off indefinitely, and the remaining Crown Jewels were transferred to the Bank of France for safekeeping while emergency security upgrades were implemented. The museum reopened three days after the heist, drawing long lines of visitors, though the gallery that once held the jewels remained behind temporary partitions — a visible reminder of an absence that may prove permanent.
