Oral Wegovy Pill Approved as Federal Deals Push to Lower Weight-Loss Drug Prices

The FDA approved an oral version of Wegovy for weight management as federal pricing agreements with drugmakers aim to widen access to GLP-1 medications.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an oral form of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk's Wegovy, in late December 2025. The approval gives patients a daily tablet option for chronic weight management, a major change for a drug class that until now has been delivered mainly through weekly injections.

A daily pill enters the weight-loss market

The oral formulation is the first GLP-1 receptor agonist approved specifically for weight management in pill form in the United States. Earlier oral semaglutide products were approved for type 2 diabetes. Clinical trials of the new pill reported meaningful average weight reductions among adults with obesity, and the company has positioned it as an alternative for patients who prefer not to use injections.

The approval adds a second route to a market that has grown rapidly over the past several years. Demand for GLP-1 drugs has surged since their introduction for diabetes and later for obesity, and manufacturers have struggled at times to keep up with prescriptions.

Federal pricing deals aim to broaden access

The approval arrives during a broader effort by the Trump administration to lower what Americans pay for these medications. In November 2025, the White House announced agreements with Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly under which both companies committed to reduce cash prices for certain GLP-1 drugs and to offer them to government programs at lower cost. The announcements also described plans for expanded coverage of obesity treatments in Medicare, with access for eligible beneficiaries expected to begin during 2026.

Coverage details, eligibility rules, and final prices depend on program implementation, and some of the arrangements remain subject to rulemaking and negotiation. Patients and insurers are still working through what the changes will mean in practice.

Safety labeling and common side effects

Like other drugs in its class, the oral semaglutide carries labeling warnings. These include the risk of pancreatitis and the potential for thyroid C-cell tumors, a finding drawn from rodent studies that led to warnings in the class labeling. Gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, are among the most commonly reported and are a leading reason patients discontinue treatment.

Physicians generally recommend that patients discuss medical history, including any personal or family history of thyroid cancer, before starting treatment. Dosing typically begins at a low level and increases gradually to help reduce side effects.

Competition and open questions

Eli Lilly has also sought regulatory approval for its own oral candidate, orforglipron, which would add another option to the market if cleared. The entry of multiple oral products could intensify price competition and affect how insurers structure coverage for obesity treatment.

Several questions remain open. These include how long patients will need to stay on the medications, whether the benefits persist after treatment ends, how supply will keep pace with demand, and whether lower cash prices will translate into broader access for lower-income patients. Public health officials and clinicians have stressed that the drugs are most effective as part of a broader care plan that includes nutrition counseling, physical activity, and ongoing medical supervision.
