The committee appointed Yin Hejun as China’s science and technology minister and Lan Foan as finance minister.
This is China’s second leadership shake-up in three months after foreign minister Qin Gang was abruptly replaced in July.
Li had not been seen publicly in weeks since he skipped a meeting in Vietnam in early September, sparking speculation about his position.
Li had been appointed to his post in March. He is watched closely by diplomats and other observers because, like Qin, he was also one of China’s five State Councillors, a cabinet position that ranks higher than a regular minister.
