Colonial America
Colonial America refers to the period of European settlement in North America from the early 17th century until the Declaration of Independence in 1776, establishing the foundations of the future United States.
Beginning with a handful of struggling coastal settlements and growing into thirteen increasingly self-governing colonies, this period laid the political and cultural foundations for an eventual independent nation.
Early European Settlements
Colonial America began with early settlements including Jamestown in 1607, followed by Plymouth and numerous subsequent colonies established by various European powers.
Thirteen British Colonies
By the mid-18th century, thirteen British colonies stretched along the Atlantic coast, each developing distinct economic and political characteristics.
Growing Self-Governance
Colonial legislatures developed increasing experience with self-governance, experience that would prove significant when tensions with Britain escalated toward revolution.
The Path to Independence
Growing colonial resentment over taxation and governance without representation ultimately led to the American Revolution and the colonies' declaration of independence in 1776.
