Early Life and Education

Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Ray West, a former Black Panther and later a Christian counselor, and Donda West, an English professor. After his parents divorced when he was three years old, he was raised primarily by his mother in Chicago, Illinois. West showed an early interest in art and music and began rapping and producing beats in his early teens. He attended Chicago's American Academy of Art before transferring to Chicago State University, which he ultimately left to pursue a music career.

Music Career

West initially gained recognition as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records, producing tracks for Jay-Z's critically acclaimed album The Blueprint (2001). He released his debut studio album, The College Dropout, in February 2004. The album was a commercial and critical success, earning ten Grammy Award nominations and winning Best Rap Album. Subsequent albums, including Late Registration (2005), Graduation (2007), and 808s & Heartbreak (2008), further cemented his reputation as a genre-defining artist.

West continued to experiment with musical styles across his discography. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) received widespread critical acclaim and is frequently cited among the greatest albums of its era. Later releases, including Yeezus (2013), The Life of Pablo (2016), ye (2018), and Donda (2021), demonstrated his continued influence across rap and popular music. Over the course of his career, West has won 24 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most decorated artists in the award's history.

Fashion and Business Ventures

In addition to his music career, West pursued extensive work in the fashion industry. He launched the Yeezy clothing line in collaboration with Adidas in 2015, which grew into a commercially significant brand generating substantial annual revenue. He also collaborated with brands including Nike and Louis Vuitton on footwear. West founded the record label GOOD Music in 2004, which signed artists including Kid Cudi, Big Sean, and Pusha T.

Personal Life

West was married to media personality Kim Kardashian from 2014 until their divorce was finalized in 2022. Together they have four children: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. His mother, Donda West, died in November 2007 following complications from cosmetic surgery. West has publicly discussed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a topic he addressed in interviews and in his music.

Public Controversies

West has been involved in numerous public controversies throughout his career. He attracted widespread media attention for interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. In subsequent years, he made a series of public statements that generated significant controversy, including remarks about slavery and political figures. Beginning in 2022, West made a series of antisemitic statements in interviews and on social media, which led multiple companies, including Adidas, Gap, and Balenciaga, to terminate their business partnerships with him. These statements were condemned by Jewish organizations and public figures internationally.

Legacy and Influence

West is widely credited with helping to shift mainstream hip-hop away from dominant street narratives toward more introspective and melodic styles in the early 2000s. His production techniques, including the use of soul samples and orchestral arrangements, have influenced a broad range of artists. Despite significant controversy in his later public life, his earlier body of work continues to be studied and referenced in discussions of contemporary music history.
