Early Life and Background

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, to Mary Christine and Maurice Keith Hudson, both Pentecostal pastors. Raised in a religiously conservative household, Perry was not permitted to listen to secular music during her childhood. She began singing in church and studied at Santa Barbara Christian School. At the age of 15, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in gospel music.

Early Career

Perry released a self-titled gospel album under the name Katy Hudson in 2001 through Red Hill Records. The album sold modestly and the label subsequently closed. She then relocated to Los Angeles, where she spent several years attempting to secure a mainstream recording contract, working with producers and labels including Island Def Jam and Columbia Records before signing with Capitol Records in 2007.

Breakthrough and Commercial Success

Perry's major-label debut single, 'I Kissed a Girl,' was released in 2008 as part of her album 'One of the Boys.' The single reached number one in numerous countries, including the United States, and became one of the most successful songs of that year. Her follow-up album, 'Teenage Dream' (2010), produced five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, making Perry the second artist in history to achieve this feat with a single album, following Michael Jackson's 'Bad.' The album's singles included 'California Gurls,' 'Teenage Dream,' 'Firework,' 'E.T.,' and 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).'

Continued Discography

Perry released 'Prism' in 2013, which included the hit singles 'Roar' and 'Dark Horse.' The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Her fourth studio album, 'Witness,' followed in 2017 and also debuted at the top of multiple charts. In 2019, she released the single 'Never Really Over,' and her fifth studio album, 'Smile,' was released in August 2020. Perry continued releasing music into the mid-2020s, maintaining an active presence in the pop music landscape.

Beyond music and television, Perry has been involved in various business ventures, including a fragrance line that has generated significant commercial revenue. She has also been a brand ambassador for several major corporations.

Tours and Live Performances
