Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps is a retired American swimmer who is the most decorated Olympian in history, having won a total of 28 Olympic medals, including 23 gold medals, across five Olympic Games.
Phelps made his first Olympic appearance at the 2000 Sydney Games at just 15 years old, and went on to dominate Olympic swimming for the following four Olympic cycles.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Phelps won a record eight gold medals in a single Games, surpassing the previous record of seven set by swimmer Mark Spitz in 1972, in a performance widely regarded as one of the greatest in Olympic history.
Phelps retired following the 2016 Rio Olympics with a combined 28 Olympic medals, a record unlikely to be broken, and has since become a prominent advocate for mental health awareness in sports.
