What started as a remote penal colony on the far side of the world grew, largely on the back of a gold rush, into Australia's largest and most recognizable city.

A Penal Colony's Beginnings

Sydney was founded in 1788 as a British penal colony, marking the first European settlement in Australia. The site was chosen by Captain Arthur Phillip, who led the "First Fleet" of convict ships, for its excellent natural harbor and freshwater supply.

From Convict Outpost to Economic Powerhouse

What began as a remote penal settlement grew over the 19th century into Australia's largest and most economically significant city, fueled first by wool exports and later by a gold rush that brought waves of immigration in the 1850s.

A Defining Architectural Icon

The Sydney Opera House, completed in 1973, was designed by Danish architect JΓΈrn Utzon after winning an international design competition. Its distinctive sail-like shells took over a decade to build using pioneering engineering techniques, and the building is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed buildings on Earth.

Host to the World

Sydney hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics, widely praised as one of the most successful Games in modern history. Today, the city remains Australia's leading center for finance, media, and tourism, anchored by its famous harbor, where the Opera House and the steel arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge stand as the city's defining landmarks.
