New York City
New York City is the most populous city in the United States, a global center of finance, culture, and media, and home to the iconic Statue of Liberty and Times Square.
Founded by Dutch colonists as New Amsterdam in 1624 on the southern tip of Manhattan, the city was renamed New York after England took control in 1664. It served as the first capital of the United States following independence.
Made up of five boroughs โ Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island โ the city became a major gateway for immigration through Ellis Island starting in the late 19th century.
Today, New York is a leading global hub for finance (home to Wall Street), media, fashion, and the arts, and hosts one of the world's busiest and most diverse populations.
