Philo Farnsworth
American inventor who, as a self-taught teenage farmhand, conceived and later built the world's first fully electronic television system, fundamentally transforming mass communication.
Philo Taylor Farnsworth was born on August 19, 1906, in a log cabin near Beaver, Utah, into a Mormon pioneer family that moved frequently across the rural American West. His early years were defined by physical hardship and intellectual hunger in roughly equal measure. When the family relocated to a farm in Rigby, Idaho, that was wired for electricity — the first the young Farnsworth had encountered — he was captivated. He devoured science magazines and electrical manuals, teaching himself the fundamentals of electronics with a voraciousness that alarmed and delighted his teachers in equal measure.
The Teenage Vision
The inspiration for electronic television came to Farnsworth in 1921, when he was just fourteen years old. According to his own account, the idea struck him while plowing a potato field: looking back at the parallel furrows he had cut, he realized that an image could be captured and transmitted electronically by scanning it line by line, exactly as his plow had moved across the field. He sketched the concept for his high school chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman, who was sufficiently impressed to save the drawings — a decision that would later prove legally significant. The key insight was that the system would use electrons rather than mechanical spinning disks, making it faster, cleaner, and far more capable of resolution than any mechanical system then being developed by competitors.
Building the First Electronic Television
After finishing high school and briefly attending Brigham Young University, Farnsworth persuaded a pair of San Francisco investors, George Everson and Leslie Gorrell, to fund his research. Working in a small rented laboratory at 202 Green Street in San Francisco, Farnsworth and a tiny team built the components of a fully electronic television system largely from scratch. On September 7, 1927, he successfully transmitted the first electronic television image — a simple straight line — using his image dissector camera tube and a receiver of his own construction. He was twenty-one years old. Within months he had improved the system enough to transmit more complex images, and he demonstrated moving pictures to investors and journalists, generating considerable excitement.
The Battle with RCA
Farnsworth's most formidable adversary was the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and its powerful research chief, Vladimir Zworykin. RCA, recognizing the commercial stakes, attempted to acquire Farnsworth's patents and, when he refused to sell, sought to undermine his priority claims by developing competing patents. The legal battle over who had invented electronic television was protracted and bitter. Farnsworth ultimately prevailed — in part because Justin Tolman produced the original high school sketch from memory and under oath — and RCA was forced to pay him royalties, a rare instance of a small independent inventor defeating the corporate giant. The victory was financially meaningful but personally costly, consuming years of Farnsworth's most productive life.
Later Years and Legacy
Despite his foundational role in creating television, Farnsworth grew deeply ambivalent about what the medium became. He reportedly told his son that he felt he had created a monster, disturbed by the low quality of much television programming. He continued inventing throughout his life, making contributions to radar, nuclear fusion research — he developed a device called a fusor — and infant incubator technology, among other areas. Years of stress, legal battles, and a difficult relationship with alcohol damaged his health. He died on March 11, 1971, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His contributions were largely uncelebrated during his lifetime, but history has steadily restored him to a central place in the story of electronic media. A statue of Philo Farnsworth stands in the United States Capitol, representing the state of Utah among the nation's honored figures.
