Liberating six modern-day countries from Spanish rule wasn't enough to hold his envisioned South American federation together — it splintered into separate nations not long after independence was won.

A Vision of Liberation

Bolívar was born into a wealthy Venezuelan family and, influenced by Enlightenment political philosophy during his education in Europe, developed a passionate commitment to South American independence from Spanish colonial rule.

Liberating a Continent

Bolívar led extensive military campaigns across present-day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia — the last named directly in his honor — achieving independence for these territories from Spanish rule between roughly 1810 and 1825.

A Dream of Unity

Bolívar envisioned a unified South American federation called Gran Colombia, combining several of the newly independent nations under a single political structure, reflecting his broader ambition for continental unity and strength.

A Union That Fractured

Despite Bolívar's ambitions, Gran Colombia ultimately fractured due to significant regional political divisions and rivalries not long after its formation, dissolving into the separate independent nations that largely persist today.

El Libertador

Bolívar is remembered as one of the most important figures in Latin American history, widely known as "El Libertador" (The Liberator), and remains a powerful and enduring symbol of independence and regional unity across South America today.
