Ancient Greek city-states that were regularly at war with one another agreed to a sacred truce every four years, just so athletes and spectators could travel safely to compete.

A Religious Festival in Ancient Greece

The ancient Olympic Games were first held in 776 BCE in Olympia, Greece, as a religious and athletic festival held every four years to honor the god Zeus. The Games continued for nearly 12 centuries before being banned in 393 CE by Roman Emperor Theodosius I as part of efforts to suppress pagan practices.

A Truce for Sport

During the ancient Games, Greek city-states, often at war with one another, observed a sacred truce known as the ekecheiria, allowing athletes and spectators to travel safely to and from Olympia — an early example of sport's power to temporarily transcend political conflict.

Revival by Coubertin

The modern Olympics were revived by French educator Pierre de Coubertin, who believed international athletic competition could promote peace and understanding between nations. The first modern Games were held in Athens in 1896, featuring roughly 14 participating nations.

Growing into a Global Spectacle

The Games have since grown dramatically, now bringing together thousands of athletes from over 200 nations and territories, held every two years alternating between Summer and Winter Games, with the Winter Olympics first introduced in 1924.

An Enduring Ideal

Despite periods of political controversy, including boycotts during the Cold War era, the Olympics remain widely regarded as the pinnacle of international amateur and professional athletic achievement, unifying the world's attention every two years around shared competition and spectacle.
