Big Tech's AI Spending Surge Keeps Climbing as Investors Question Payoff Timelines
Major technology companies raised their artificial intelligence infrastructure spending forecasts in late 2025, deepening investor debate over when those billions will generate returns.
Several of the largest technology companies in the United States have raised their spending plans for artificial intelligence infrastructure, committing tens of billions of dollars to data centers, chips and power supply. The moves, disclosed in quarterly earnings reports in the fall of 2025, have intensified a debate among investors about whether the buildout will generate profits large enough to justify its cost.
Spending Forecasts Move Higher
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, raised its full-year 2025 capital expenditure forecast in October to a range of roughly $91 billion to $93 billion, up from its earlier estimate of about $75 billion. The company said much of the increase was tied to technical infrastructure supporting its AI products and cloud business.
Meta Platforms also lifted its 2025 capital expense outlook, to a range of about $70 billion to $72 billion. The company said it expected capital spending to grow significantly in 2026 as it builds out computing capacity for its AI models and advertising systems. Meta also sold roughly $30 billion in bonds in late October, one of the largest corporate debt offerings of the year, to help fund the work.
Microsoft reported capital expenditures, including finance leases, of about $34.9 billion in its first fiscal quarter of 2026, which ended in September. Amazon, which operates the Amazon Web Services cloud unit, has also signaled that its capital spending will rise further, with the bulk directed at data centers and custom chips.
Chipmakers and Cloud Providers Benefit
The spending wave has been a direct source of revenue for semiconductor companies, particularly Nvidia, whose data center business has become its largest segment. Demand for advanced graphics processors has remained strong, and supply constraints for high-bandwidth memory and advanced packaging have been widely cited across the industry.
AI developers have also signed large multiyear computing agreements. In September 2025, Oracle disclosed a contract with OpenAI reported to be worth about $300 billion over roughly five years. Nvidia separately announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as the two companies coordinate on data center deployments. Other chip and cloud providers have announced similar arrangements, though the timing and financial terms of many of these deals remain subject to change.
Investors Weigh Risks
Despite strong demand, the scale of the investment has prompted caution. Analysts have raised questions about depreciation costs, since servers and chips lose value quickly, and about whether AI software and services revenue will grow fast enough to cover the expense. Some investors have also pointed to the growing use of debt and off-balance-sheet financing for data center projects as a factor to watch.
Shares of several major technology companies experienced volatility in late 2025 as markets reacted to earnings and to signs of how much capital the companies intend to commit. Market participants have been watching closely for evidence that AI products are producing measurable increases in revenue, customer adoption and margins.
What Comes Next
Companies are expected to provide more detailed guidance on 2026 spending in early 2026 earnings reports. Those disclosures will give investors a clearer view of whether the buildout is accelerating, stabilizing or beginning to moderate. Regulators and utilities are also watching the sector closely, as data centers place new demands on electricity grids in several regions.
For now, the central question remains the same: whether the current level of spending can be matched by returns that justify it. The answer will shape corporate strategy, capital markets and the broader economy in the years ahead.
