80-year-old allegedly shoots, kills fellow turkey hunter: Sheriff

An 80-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing another man in a turkey hunting incident in Northern California, authorities said.

John Lee was at the Fremont Weir Wildlife Area on Sunday morning when he “reportedly fired his shotgun into the brush, hoping to shoot a turkey, though unaware of what he was aiming at,” the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

A shotgun shell from the 80-year-old’s gun allegedly struck 65-year-old Shawn Parrish once in the back of the head, authorities said. Parish was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Lee and Parish were both turkey hunting separately at the time, according to authorities.

Lee was taken into custody on charges of second-degree murder and negligent discharge of a firearm, the sheriff’s office said. Under the California penal code, second-degree murder covers all forms of murder which aren’t intentional and premeditated.

His arraignment is set for Wednesday.
