9 Tips for Making Amazing Deviled Eggs, America's Most Underrated Snack
I believe I’m in the majority when I say that deviled eggs are one of my favorite side dishes of all time. Although they typically only make an appearance on my dinner table during holidays, I look forward to playing around with the recipe every year.
Most recently, my go-to recipe has included mayonnaise, dijon mustard, dill pickle juice or finely diced pickles, salt, pepper and paprika. But there are countless other deviled egg variations you can try. So we asked Chef Tyler Florence, co-owner of Wayfare Tavern, Food Network star, cookbook author and TV host, for his best deviled egg tips. Plus, we scoured Reddit to see how others are wowing their guests with stand-out deviled egg ingredients.Â

Picking out the eggs
The first step, Florence says, is choosing the right type of eggs.Â
“Creating the perfect deviled egg starts with the quality of the eggs,” he says. “I prefer using fresh, local eggs for their rich flavor. After boiling, I cool them in ice water to make peeling easier.”Â

Make peeling the eggs a breezeÂ
For many, the most dreaded part of making deviled eggs is peeling dozens of hard-boiled eggs at once. But Florence has a helpful tip for this step: Add “a splash of vinegar and salt” to your boiling water.Â
“This helps with peeling by preventing the egg whites from sticking to the shell,” he says. “After boiling, gently tap the egg on a hard surface to crack the shell, then roll it to break it further, creating more surface area for easier peeling. If you’re still having trouble, insert a spoon between the shell and the egg and gently twist to lift the shell away.”
Add finely diced pickles or celery for a crunchÂ
I personally use dill pickles in my deviled eggs, but any type of pickle would work, and it’s a great way to add a salty — or even sweet — crunch. A relish of your choice would also do the trick.
Apple cider vinegar can take your eggs up a notchÂ
Multiple Reddit users agree that adding a splash of apple cider vinegar is another easy way to increase the flavor profile. However, other types of vinegar would also work. Florence says he blends together a touch of vinegar, mayonnaise, mustard and seasonings with his cooked egg yolks.
“Achieving the right balance of creaminess and tang is essential,” he adds. Â Â

Use pickled eggsÂ
When asked for their best deviled egg recipes, one Reddit user said they make a specific type of deviled egg on Easter using beet-pickled hard-boiled eggs. They turn out bright in color and rich in flavor.Â
Marinate your eggsÂ
On the same thread — which has garnered dozens of comments and recipes — another user says they soak their eggs for up to 12 hours in soy sauce, miso paste, brown sugar and bourbon for a unique flavor.Â
Add a hint of heat
If you or your family are fans of spicy food or just want a slight kick, adding a dash of cayenne pepper or diced jalapenño into the egg yolks are great ways to achieve it.Â
Use a piping tip for the yolks
Whether you already have one on hand from decorating desserts, or you want to purchase one specifically for your deviled eggs, a piping tip will help your eggs look as good as they taste. If you’re in a pinch, you can also use a plastic storage bag by cutting the end off one corner.
Choosing the right dish to serve the eggs will also help them stand out.Â
“A colorful plate or simple serving board can enhance their presentation,” Florence says. “At my house, we collect vintage egg plates to use at family dinners and gatherings, which you can often find at estate sales and antique shops.”
Garnish your deviled eggs
As a final touch, sprinkle your deviled eggs with paprika or curry powder for a pop of color and extra flavor.Â
“To make deviled eggs stand out, consider adding unexpected ingredients like smoked paprika, bacon bits, pickle juice or sriracha for heat,” Florence says. “Fresh herbs like dill or chives can also add a fun twist. Always taste as you go to find the perfect balance.”
