Tsunami advisory issued as strong earthquake strikes off Japanese coast

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory for parts of the country’s eastern coastline on Sunday after an earthquake was detected in the Pacific Ocean.

The agency and the U.S. Geological Survey both said the magnitude 6.7 quake was detected around 78 miles east of the coastal town of Yamada, at a depth of just over six miles.

The JMA issued a tsunami advisory for the coastline of Iwate Prefecture in the northeast of Japan’s Honshu island, warning that a wave of more than 3 feet may arrive in the area.

A tsunami forecast — meaning slight sea level changes — was also issued for much of the country’s northeast.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
