Dozens injured in stampede at India’s Maha Kumbh festival: Reports

Dozens of people were injured after a stampede in India’s Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday (Jan 29) as thousands turned up for a holy dip in the Ganga for the Maha Kumbh festival, local media outlets reported.

The massive number of people made it difficult for the administration to manage and control, the Hindustan Times said.

The “stampede-like situation” resulted in several people suffering injuries, witnesses told India Today TV.

The number of injuries are yet to be confirmed. Ambulances took the injured to a makeshift hospital, according to reports.

Held every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh Mela or Great Pitcher Festival, as the religious event in the city of Prayagraj in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh is called, attracts more than 400 million visitors.
