The World This Week – Twelve months that shook the world: What lessons on Russian invasion anniversary?

Issued on:

One year ago today, Vladimir Putin shocked the world with his bid to take Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine. It turned out to be the first of many surprises.

After the troop build-up, the failed mediation and Putin’s speech denouncing Ukraine as a fiction, Russian special forces swooped for the Ukrainian capital’s main military airport in a bid to establish an air bridge to seize Kyiv.

The conflict has now become an artillery war in the heart of Europe, with the current battle for Bakhmut likened to the two years of trench warfare slaughter between the French and Germans at Verdun during World War I.

So, what next? In this special edition of The World This Week, Francois Picard and his panel of journalists look back at one year of fighting on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
