The debate, without a live audience, opens with disputes over the country’s economy.

Harris criticises Trump for the state of the economy when he left office, and says she instead plans to build on hopes and aspirations of the American people, and aims to create an “opportunity economy”.

“What we have done is clean up Donald Trump’s mess,” Harris says.

The Democratic vice president also warns for the dangers of the policies listed in Project 2025. Trump denies to have read the plan.

The pair also clash over policies surrounding abortion. Harris gave an impassioned speech on reproductive rights and says “Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body”. She warns that the former President would assign a national abortion ban if he wins.

Trump challenges Harris and asks her whether she supports abortion in the third trimester, and claims abortions are happening in the ninth month of pregnancy. He adds that in some states children are executed after birth.

Moderator Linsey Davis clarifies to viewers that there is no state in the country where it is legal to kill a child after it is born.
