Few scientific ideas have entered popular culture as thoroughly as Einstein's, to the point that his name itself has become a shorthand for genius — yet the theory that made him famous began as the private project of an unknown patent clerk.

Early Life and Education

Born in Ulm, Germany, in 1879, Einstein showed early fascination with mathematics and physics, teaching himself geometry at age twelve. He struggled with the rigid, authoritarian teaching style of German schools and later renounced his German citizenship, eventually enrolling at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich. After graduating, he took a position as a patent clerk in Bern, Switzerland — a job that gave him the time and freedom to develop his own ideas in physics.

The Miracle Year and Relativity

In 1905, often called his "miracle year," Einstein published four groundbreaking papers, including his special theory of relativity, which proposed that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers and that the speed of light is constant regardless of the observer's motion. A decade later, in 1915, he extended this work into the general theory of relativity, which explained gravity not as a force but as a curvature of spacetime caused by mass — a radical departure from Newtonian physics that was confirmed by observations of a solar eclipse in 1919, making Einstein an international celebrity almost overnight.

Nobel Prize and Later Career

In 1921, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics — notably for his explanation of the photoelectric effect rather than relativity, which remained scientifically controversial at the time. He emigrated to the United States in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution as a Jewish scientist, and spent the remainder of his career at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where he continued searching, unsuccessfully, for a unified field theory.

Legacy

Beyond physics, Einstein was an outspoken advocate for civil rights, nuclear disarmament, and international cooperation, and famously urged President Roosevelt to develop atomic research ahead of Nazi Germany — a decision he later called one of his life's greatest regrets. His famous equation, E=mc², remains one of the most recognized formulas in the world, encapsulating the equivalence of mass and energy and underpinning both nuclear power and our understanding of the stars.
