Christianity is a monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and is the world's largest religion by number of adherents.
Christianity emerged in the 1st century CE among the followers of Jesus, a Jewish preacher whom Christians believe to be the Son of God, and spread rapidly across the Roman Empire despite early periods of persecution.
The religion's central text, the Bible, is divided into the Old Testament, shared with Judaism, and the New Testament, which recounts the life of Jesus and the early Christian church.
Christianity later split into major branches including Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism, particularly following the 16th-century Reformation led by figures like Martin Luther, and today has over two billion adherents worldwide.
