She would go on to become the only woman ever to serve as India's Prime Minister, ultimately assassinated by her own bodyguards following one of the most controversial decisions of her tenure.

A Political Inheritance

Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, and rose through the ranks of the Indian National Congress party before becoming Prime Minister herself in 1966.

War and the Birth of Bangladesh

Gandhi led India through the 1971 war with Pakistan, a conflict that resulted in the creation of the independent nation of Bangladesh from what had previously been East Pakistan, significantly reshaping the geopolitical map of South Asia.

The Emergency

Gandhi's tenure included a highly controversial period known as "the Emergency," from 1975 to 1977, during which she suspended civil liberties and ruled largely by decree, drawing significant domestic and international criticism for authoritarian overreach.

A Return to Power

Despite an electoral defeat following the Emergency, Gandhi returned to power in 1980, continuing to shape Indian politics and policy through her renewed tenure as Prime Minister.

Assassination

Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by her own bodyguards, following her controversial decision to order a military operation against Sikh separatists occupying the Golden Temple in Amritsar, an event that remains a significant and painful chapter in modern Indian history.
