Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr was a Danish physicist whose model of atomic structure and foundational contributions to quantum theory earned him the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Bohr proposed a groundbreaking model of the atom in 1913, describing electrons as orbiting the nucleus in specific, quantized energy levels, resolving inconsistencies in earlier atomic models.
He went on to make major contributions to the development of quantum mechanics, including the principle of complementarity, and founded the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen, which became a leading center for quantum physics research.
During World War II, Bohr fled Nazi-occupied Denmark and later contributed to the Manhattan Project, though he became a vocal advocate for the peaceful use of atomic energy and international nuclear cooperation after the war.
