What began as a horse race celebrating a royal wedding in 1810 eventually dropped the horses entirely and kept the beer, growing into the largest festival of its kind in the world.

A Royal Wedding Celebration

The festival originated in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, with a horse race held on fields just outside Munich that proved so popular it became an annual tradition, gradually evolving into the beer-centered festival celebrated today.

Named for the Fields

The festival's original celebration grounds, still used today, are named Theresienwiese after the bride, Princess Therese, and Munich locals still often refer to the festival simply as "Wiesn" in reference to these historic fields.

Beer Tents and Traditions

Modern Oktoberfest features large tents operated by Munich's major breweries, serving beer brewed specifically for the festival according to traditional Bavarian purity standards, alongside classic foods including pretzels, sausages, and roasted chicken.

An Enormous Modern Celebration

The festival now draws over six million visitors annually to Munich over a period of roughly two weeks spanning late September and early October, making it one of the largest public festivals in the world.

A Global Phenomenon

Oktoberfest's enormous popularity has inspired similar Oktoberfest-themed celebrations in cities around the world, from the United States to Australia, though none matches the scale or historical authenticity of the original Munich festival.
