Having mastered classical painting technique before most of his peers had finished their formal training, Picasso spent the rest of his career deliberately breaking every rule he'd already perfected.

A Prodigy's Early Training

Picasso showed exceptional artistic talent from early childhood, trained rigorously by his father, an art teacher, and reportedly mastered classical academic painting techniques well before his teenage years, allowing him to spend his later career deliberately breaking from those very traditions.

Arriving in Paris

Picasso moved to Paris as a young man, immersing himself in the city's vibrant avant-garde art scene, where he cycled through several distinct early stylistic phases, including his somber "Blue Period" and the warmer "Rose Period" that followed.

Inventing Cubism

Alongside French artist Georges Braque, Picasso developed Cubism in the early 20th century, a revolutionary artistic style that depicted subjects from multiple perspectives simultaneously, fracturing traditional forms of visual representation that had dominated Western art for centuries.

Guernica

Picasso's 1937 painting Guernica, created in outraged response to the bombing of a Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, remains one of the most powerful anti-war artworks ever produced, using stark black, white, and gray imagery to convey the horror of civilian suffering.

An Immense Body of Work

Picasso produced an estimated 50,000 artworks across painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking over his long career, dying in 1973 as one of the most prolific and commercially successful artists in history.
