What began as a modest Roman river outpost eventually became the stage for a revolution, an empire, and an entire artistic movement, each leaving its mark on the same square miles along the Seine.

From Roman Outpost to Capital

Paris grew from a Celtic settlement called Lutetia on the Île de la Cité, an island in the Seine River, first significantly developed under Roman rule beginning in the 1st century BCE. It gradually expanded outward along both banks of the river to become the political and cultural heart of France by the medieval period.

A Center of Revolution and Ideas

Paris played a central role in the French Revolution of 1789, when the storming of the Bastille prison marked the beginning of the collapse of the French monarchy. The city was also a driving force of the Enlightenment, home to philosophers like Voltaire and Rousseau, and later became a magnet for artists and writers during movements including Impressionism and Modernism.

Iconic Landmarks

The city is home to some of the world's most recognized landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum (the world's most-visited art museum), Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Arc de Triomphe. Its distinctive Haussmann-era architecture, with wide boulevards and uniform limestone buildings, was largely shaped by a massive 19th-century urban renewal project.

A Global Cultural Capital

Paris remains a major global center for fashion, cuisine, finance, and diplomacy, hosting international institutions including UNESCO and prestigious universities such as the Sorbonne. It draws tens of millions of international visitors each year, cementing its reputation as one of the most visited cities on Earth.
