Background
In the early 20th century, molasses was a crucial industrial commodity in the United States, used primarily in the production of industrial alcohol and, before Prohibition, in the distillation of rum. The Purity Distilling Company, a subsidiary of United States Industrial Alcohol (USIA), operated a large storage tank in Boston's densely populated North End neighborhood, adjacent to Commercial Street near Boston Harbor. The tank, completed in 1915, stood 50 feet tall and 90 feet in diameter, capable of holding 2.5 million gallons of molasses.
The Disaster
Shortly after noon on January 15, 1919, the tank catastrophically failed. Residents later recalled hearing a sound like machine gun fire followed by a rumbling roar as the tank's rivets gave way. A wave of molasses estimated at 25 feet high swept through the surrounding streets at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The force of the surge demolished buildings, overturned freight cars, and collapsed an elevated railway support structure. Twenty-one people were killed and approximately 150 were injured. Horses, dogs, and other animals were also trapped and killed in the thick, rapidly cooling syrup.
Rescue and Cleanup
The rescue operation was extraordinary in its difficulty. The molasses quickly cooled and thickened in the January air, trapping victims and hampering the movements of rescuers. Boston firefighters, police, Red Cross workers, and sailors from a nearby naval yard worked for days to locate survivors and recover bodies. Cleanup of the affected area took weeks, with crews using salt water hoses and sand to address the pervasive molasses. Local residents reported the smell of molasses lingering in the neighborhood for years afterward.
Legal Aftermath
Survivors and victims' families filed suit against USIA. The resulting trial was a landmark in American legal history, lasting nearly six years and involving 3,000 witnesses and 45,000 pages of testimony. A court-appointed auditor concluded that the tank had been structurally inadequate from the time of its construction and that USIA had been negligent in its design and maintenance. USIA ultimately paid out approximately $628,000 in settlements. The case was influential in establishing the principle that corporations could be held liable for negligent engineering practices.
Engineering Legacy
The Great Molasses Flood prompted Massachusetts and other states to require that engineering and construction plans be certified by licensed engineers before approval. This was among the first regulatory actions of its kind in the United States and is regarded as an early milestone in the development of modern engineering safety standards. The disaster is studied in engineering programs as a case study in structural failure and corporate negligence.
