The two rivers meet at Khartoum, Sudan, before flowing on together to the Mediterranean Sea.

Today, the Nile remains essential to agriculture, transportation, and drinking water for roughly 500 million people living across its basin. Its management remains a significant and sometimes tense point of diplomacy among the eleven countries it passes through, particularly regarding large infrastructure projects like Ethiopia's Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
