Timothée Hal Chalamet was born on December 27, 1995, in New York City, New York, to Marc Chalamet, a French editor and journalist, and Nicole Flender, an American actress and real estate broker. He has dual American and French citizenship. His maternal grandfather, Harold Flender, was a screenwriter and author, and his sister, Pauline Chalamet, is also an actress. Chalamet spent portions of his childhood in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France, and attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City. He later studied at Columbia University and subsequently transferred to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts before departing to pursue his acting career full-time.

Chalamet began his acting career with minor television roles, including appearances in the series Law & Order and a recurring role in the Showtime drama Homeland, in which he played the character Finn Walden from 2012 to 2013. He made his feature film debut in Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children (2014).
