Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister during World War II, leading the United Kingdom through its most difficult period of the war with defiant wartime leadership.
Churchill became Prime Minister in 1940 as Nazi Germany advanced across Europe, and his defiant speeches and refusal to negotiate with Hitler helped rally British resolve during the darkest days of the war, including the Blitz bombing campaign.
He forged close alliances with the United States and Soviet Union, working with leaders Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin to coordinate the Allied war effort that ultimately defeated Nazi Germany.
After losing the 1945 election shortly after the war ended, Churchill later returned as Prime Minister from 1951 to 1955. He was also an accomplished writer, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.
