Israeli troops are seizing control of the outskirts of Gaza City as Israel says its military is in the early stages of a takeover of the whole city.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan has faced fierce criticism from the international community, which fears it could displace hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
The IDF’s spokesperson Effie Defrin says the planned capture of the city aims to detach Hamas from the local population, despite concern about potential harm to the remaining Israeli hostages.
