Spain election: Ruling leftists withstood the odds, far right lost 19 seats

The spectre of the far right entering the Spanish government all but disappeared after Sunday’s elections. The ultra nationalist vox party lost support in the vote, meaning there’s little chance it’ll be the kingmaker for a governing coalition. Though the mainstream conservative Popular Party came in first place, it performed well below predictions. It’s all relatively good news for Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, whose socialist party came in second place and looks set to gain two more seats than in the last election. Now begins the battle between the leftist and rightwing blocs as they look to form potental governing coalitions. FRANCE 24’s Carolyn Lamboley and Héloïse Melan tell us more.
