Thailand ex-PM Thaksin gets royal pardon, parole ends Aug 18, lawyer says
BANGKOK: Thai former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was included in a royal pardon for prisoners and his parole will end on Sunday (Aug 18), his lawyer Winyat Chartmontri told Reuters on Saturday.
Thaksin’s parole had been due to end at the end of the month. The earlier finish comes as part of a general royal pardon for 7,500 prisoners with good conduct on the occasion of King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday last month.
The 75-year-old returned to Thailand in 2023 from 15 years of self-imposed exile.
He was convicted of abuse of power and conflicts of interest and sentenced to eight years in prison, later commuted to one year by the king.
Thaksin was released on parole on Feb 18 after six months in detention.
