Wednesday’s rate pause came as more signs have emerged that the Fed’s efforts are working. Still, Jerome H. Powell, the Fed chair, said the central bank would like to see “credible evidence” that inflation has topped out.
Fed officials also want to give themselves time to assess the effects of their policy to avoid tipping the economy into a recession.
