Coldplay wins praise at Tokyo concert after performing song for fan who lost her husband

After performing Hymn For The Weekend, Coldplay singer Chris Martin spotted two fans (a mother and son) holding up a sign and proceeded to read off it, saying: “Can you play Everglow?” This got the crowd roaring as Everglow is not part of Music Of The Spheres’ permanent setlist.

Martin then beckoned the two fans to come on stage and led them to his piano. Once the two fans were settled, Martin took the sign to show its full message to the rest of the audience: “Can you play Everglow for my husband in heaven?”

Martin replied: “Yes (I) can and we will,” as attendees erupted into a sea of applause and cheers while the two fans started sobbing.

Before launching into a soulful performance of Everglow, Martin explained the meaning of the song: “This song is about when somebody leaves the human form and they stay with you as a loving warm feeling in your heart and your soul. And they’re around you and they protect you and they love you. So this is a good choice, I think.”

Videos of Martin’s heartwarming gesture have resonated with fans and non-fans alike, with most of them calling him a “beautiful human being”. Others commented that they cried while watching the videos and proceeded to share their memories of their departed loved ones.

Coldplay is set to perform a record-breaking six nights at the Singapore National Stadium this January. Tickets for all six shows have sold out, even after organisers added a limited number of tickets last October.
