Twice a year, the setting sun casts a shadow down the main pyramid's staircase that appears to move like a slithering serpent, a deliberate effect built into the structure by astronomers over a thousand years ago.

A Center of Power and Trade

Built by the Maya civilization and later significantly influenced by the Toltec culture from central Mexico, Chichen Itza flourished as a major political, religious, and economic center between roughly 600 and 1200 CE.

El Castillo's Astronomical Design

The site's central pyramid, known as El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulcán, was designed with extraordinary astronomical precision: during the spring and autumn equinoxes, shifting shadows create the illusion of a serpent slithering down the staircase, reflecting the Maya's sophisticated understanding of astronomy.

A Blend of Cultures

Chichen Itza's architecture reflects a distinctive blend of traditional Maya building styles with elements introduced by the Toltec, evidenced by structures like the Temple of the Warriors, which shows clear stylistic similarities to Toltec structures found in central Mexico.

A Sacred Sinkhole

The site includes a large natural sinkhole known as the Sacred Cenote, into which archaeologists have recovered artifacts, including gold, jade, and human remains, believed to have been offered as ritual sacrifices to Maya deities, particularly the rain god Chaac.

A Modern Wonder

Chichen Itza was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, and remains one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico today.
