Standing at 29,032 feet (8,849 meters), Everest was first confirmed as the world's highest peak by a British survey in the 1850s, and was originally referred to locally as Sagarmatha (in Nepali) and Chomolungma (in Tibetan).

Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Nepali Sherpa mountaineer, became the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit on May 29, 1953.

Since then, thousands of climbers have reached the summit, though the mountain remains extremely dangerous due to altitude sickness, avalanches, and unpredictable weather, and it has claimed hundreds of lives.
