Dua Lipa is a British-Albanian singer, songwriter, and model born on August 22, 1995, in London. She rose to global fame with her self-titled debut album and achieved widespread critical acclaim with her second album, Future Nostalgia.
Early Life
Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in Westminster, London, to Albanian parents Dukagjin Lipa and Anesa Lipa. Her father, Dukagjin, is a musician and marketing professional, and her mother worked in tourism. The family moved to Pristina, Kosovo, when Dua was eleven years old, following the Kosovo War. At age fifteen, she returned to London independently to pursue a career in the music industry. She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School on a part-time basis before completing her secondary education at Parliament Hill School.
Career Beginnings
Lipa began her career working as a model for agencies including Models 1. She simultaneously pursued music, uploading cover songs to YouTube and eventually signing with Tap Music Management. In 2015, she signed a recording contract with Warner Music Group. Her debut single, "New Love," was released in 2015, followed by "Be the One" later that year, which charted in several European countries.
Debut Album
Dua Lipa released her self-titled debut studio album in June 2017. The album reached number three on the UK Albums Chart and produced several successful singles, including "IDGAF" and "New Rules." "New Rules" became a breakthrough hit, reaching number one in the United Kingdom and charting in numerous countries worldwide. The accompanying music video received widespread attention and has accumulated billions of views on YouTube. The album earned her two Brit Awards in 2018, including Best British Female Solo Artist and Best British Breakthrough Act.
Future Nostalgia and International Success
Her second studio album, Future Nostalgia, was released on March 27, 2020. The album was heavily influenced by 1980s and early 1990s dance-pop and disco music. It debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and reached the top ten in numerous countries. Singles from the album, including "Don't Start Now," "Physical," and "Levitating," achieved significant commercial success. "Don't Start Now" reached the top five in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Future Nostalgia earned Lipa three Grammy Awards at the 2021 ceremony, including Best Pop Vocal Album. She also won the Brit Award for Album of the Year in 2021. A remix companion album titled Club Future Nostalgia was released in August 2020, featuring collaborations with artists such as Madonna, Missy Elliott, and Mark Ronson.
Later Work and Other Ventures
In 2024, Lipa released her third studio album, Radical Optimism, which debuted at number one in the United Kingdom. The lead single "Houdini" preceded the album's release and performed well internationally. Beyond music, Lipa has been involved in modelling and brand partnerships with companies including Versace and Evian. She launched a newsletter and editorial platform called Service95 in 2022, which covers culture, travel, and current affairs. Lipa has also appeared as an actress, making her feature film debut in the action-comedy Argylle, released in 2024.

Lipa holds both British and Albanian citizenship and has also obtained Kosovo citizenship. She has spoken publicly about her Albanian and Kosovar heritage on multiple occasions and has been involved in philanthropic efforts related to Kosovo, co-founding the Sunny Hill Foundation with her father, which organizes an annual music festival to raise funds for charitable causes in the region.
