Early Life
Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1867, Curie grew up under Russian occupation, where opportunities for higher education were severely limited for women. She eventually moved to Paris to study physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne.
Scientific Discoveries
Working alongside her husband Pierre Curie, she discovered two new elements: polonium, named after her native Poland, and radium. Her research laid the foundation for the field of atomic physics and earned her the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, shared with Pierre and Henri Becquerel.
A Second Nobel Prize
In 1911, Curie won a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for her continued work isolating pure radium. She remains the only person in history to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields.
Legacy
Curie's research paved the way for modern cancer treatment through radiotherapy. She died in 1934 from aplastic anemia, likely caused by her prolonged exposure to radiation during decades of research โ a field she helped pioneer before its risks were understood.
