Data Shared Without Consent
Franklin's data and images were shown to competing researchers James Watson and Francis Crick without her knowledge or consent by a colleague, and this information proved instrumental in their subsequent published model of the DNA double helix in 1953.
Recognition Denied
Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins (who had shared Franklin's work) were awarded the Nobel Prize for the DNA discovery in 1962, a prize Franklin could not share, as Nobel Prizes are not awarded posthumously and she had died several years earlier.
Posthumous Recognition
Franklin died of ovarian cancer in 1958 at just 37 years old. In recent decades, she has received growing and much-deserved recognition for her essential, long under-credited role in one of the most important discoveries in the history of biology.
