Its architect died with the project barely a quarter finished, and construction has continued in his absence for over a century, funded entirely by visitors rather than any government budget.

Gaudí Takes Over

Architect Antoni Gaudí took over the Sagrada Familia project in 1883, just a year after construction began under a different architect, and devoted the remaining decades of his life almost entirely to the ambitious basilica.

A Uniquely Organic Style

Gaudí developed an extraordinarily detailed and unconventional architectural style for the basilica, incorporating natural forms inspired by trees, animals, and plants, alongside intricate religious symbolism and pioneering, highly innovative structural engineering techniques.

An Unfinished Masterpiece

Gaudí died in 1926 after being struck by a tram, with the basilica only about a quarter complete at the time of his death, leaving future generations of architects and builders to interpret and continue his complex, often incomplete plans and models.

Funded by Visitors, Not Governments

Remarkably, construction has continued for well over a century since Gaudí's death, funded entirely through private donations and visitor admission fees rather than any government or public funding, a deliberate choice reflecting the project's origins as a devotional undertaking.

Nearing Completion

The basilica was formally consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, even while construction continued around it, and completion is now targeted for the coming years, making it one of the longest-running construction projects in architectural history.
