Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is a large unfinished Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona, Spain, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, whose construction began in 1882 and continues to this day.

Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and devoted the rest of his life to it, developing an extraordinarily detailed and organic architectural style incorporating natural forms, intricate symbolism, and innovative structural engineering.

Gaudí died in 1926 with the basilica only about a quarter complete, and construction has continued for over a century since, funded entirely through private donations and visitor admissions rather than public funds.

The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, and completion is now targeted for the coming years, over 140 years after construction first began, making it one of the longest-running construction projects in the world.
