Maya civilization developed sophisticated city-states across the Yucatán Peninsula and surrounding regions, reaching its cultural height during the Classic Period, roughly 250 to 900 CE, with cities like Tikal and Chichen Itza serving as major centers.
The Maya developed one of the only fully developed writing systems in the pre-Columbian Americas, along with an advanced understanding of astronomy and a complex calendar system used to track time with remarkable precision.
Although many major Maya cities were abandoned by around 900 CE for reasons still debated by historians, Maya culture and descendant populations continue to exist today across the region, preserving elements of their ancestral language and traditions.
