Early Life

Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Claire Stoermer, is of German and Scottish descent, and her father, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, is of African American descent. Zendaya grew up in Oakland and attended the Oakland School for the Arts, where she studied acting. She also trained at the California Shakespeare Theater, where her mother worked as a house manager. From an early age, she participated in theater productions and modeled for children's clothing brands.

Career Beginnings

Zendaya began her professional career as a child model and backup dancer before landing her breakthrough role as Rocky Blue on the Disney Channel series Shake It Up, which premiered in 2010.
