No reports of Singaporeans injured in Taiwan earthquake

SINGAPORE: There are currently no reports of Singaporeans injured in Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said as it expressed its condolences to the people affected.

At least nine people were killed and more than 900 injured when the 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck offshore at around 8am local time, about 18km south of Taiwan’s Hualien City.

Dozens of buildings were damaged and there were massive landslides on the island.

“The Singapore government is saddened by the loss of lives and damage caused by the earthquake which struck off Hualien, Taiwan on Apr 3, 2024, and extends its condolences and sympathies to those affected,” MFA said in a press statement.

MFA said it has been reaching out to Singaporeans who registered with the ministry and is providing the necessary consular assistance.

“In view of possible aftershocks, Singaporeans in Taiwan are advised to remain vigilant, take all necessary precautions for their personal safety and heed the instructions of the local authorities,” said the ministry.

Singaporeans who are in or travelling to Taiwan are encouraged to register with MFA online and to buy comprehensive travel insurance.

Singaporeans in Taiwan who need consular assistance can contact the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei at +886 2 2772 1940 or via its emergency telephone number +886 953 532 638.

They can also call the MFA Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/8855. The hotline is open round-the-clock.
